....History shows that a school shooting lasts, on average, 3 minutes. It takes police & first responders approximately 5 to 8 minutes to get to site of crime. Highly trained, gun adept, teachers/coaches would solve the problem instantly, before police arrive. GREAT DETERRENT!
Despite growing evidence about fundamentally flawed metrics like journal impact factors, careers still live/die based on them. Early career, women and minorities are often hurt most. And I've seen zero meaningful attempts at change either. Read on ... frontiersin.org/article/10.338…
3/3 I hope @NavdeepSBains will continue to invest in #superclusters and that #healthcare will get its act together to take advantage of these federal investments because nothing else will come close with regards to jobs, benefits to society and GDP than a healthcare supercluster.
2/3 The 'Canada Health Act' was arguably a supercluster before #superclusters were cool. With the advent of @Apple and @amazon entering the EHR space, disruption will be swift and wide-reaching. Healthcare and #healthtech need to learn to mobilize and work better together.
1/3 Stoked to learn about the #CDNpoli#superclusters announcement today, but was also disappointed to see that none of the winners were related to #CDNhealth. We spend nearly $230 billion a year on our #healthcare system and healthcare is easily a trillion dollar global market.
I can't imagine what it must be like to be an elected official in America. To sit there, day in and day out... knowing that, at anytime, they could collectively enact sensible #GunControlNow and still 👏 choose 👏 to 👏 do 👏 nothing.
Lol. @pellinglab is unstoppable. They're now creating an app for Zebra Fish. "Over the next 100 days the Fin-drr team is going to explore this fusion of data, computer vision, motion tracking technology and the science of fish mating." Think I'm kidding? > medium.com/phacktory/fin-…
We have a date! On Feb. 27th, I'll present #YourBudget2018 - the next step in our plan to grow the middle class, and build an economy where every Canadian has an equal and fair shot at success. Stay tuned!
@MKutney You're welcome and thank you so much for sharing your very thoughtful insights, @MKutney. There are indeed many nuanced aspects to the social deficit discussion and you definitely touched on those. Working with many, we intend keep up the convos and to push these issues forward.
4/4 All that to say, an ambitious/accurate paper of the charitable sector's contribution to the economy and the extent of how it could contribute more if just treated like an adult. TY @ImagineCanada for leading these critical policy discussions and creating food for thought.
3/4 I was also disappointed that technology is never mentioned once in the paper. It is more than just policy shifts and a seat at the table in government, the sector needs to adopt technology and start inventing its own. This would also greatly contribute to the social deficit.
2/4 but the paper doesn't make any acknowledgement of the sector's own shortcomings - can we really claim that 100% growth in charities from 1997 to 2007 was solely "needs driven?" With Canada's 170,000+ charities/nonprofits - are that many "needed?" Most people can barely name 5
1/4 Very interesting discussion paper from @ImagineCanada - "Beyond Synergy: Charities Building the Future Canadians Want." Strongly support arguments around the social deficit issue and a real-link to government via a minister of charity - imaginecanada.ca/our-programs/c…
Today is an important day for @CHEOhospital. They are looking for public support for an integrated treatment centre - this would mean shorter wait times, improving comfort and increasing service capacity. Visit 1door4care.ca for more info. #1door4care
