I have so many! But one book I keep going back to and rereading is Vladmir Nabokov's Lolita. Another favourite is Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Oh, and I regularly reread Shakespeare and Wilde!

I think subject matter expertise is very important for nonfiction. Having said that, if you know the subject well, I don't think you need the qualifications to prove it!

Hey. Depends entirely on the content of the book and whether there are readers for it. Once I fall in love with a text, the one question I ask myself when looking at a book proposal is: 'Who is this book's reader?' Once I have an answer, I find it easier to tackle other issues.

An advance is what an author gets before the book is published, and it is an advance AGAINST royalties, which means that an author's future royalties are adjusted against the advance. So it depends on sales projections.
