@mazst @patcat63 Both my youngest children couldn't read the word 'would' using phonics but could read it in syntactic context.

@mazst @patcat63 Some decode but don't 'get' what the thing they've decoded means. Some decode c-v-c's and can't decode non-regular words...

"Sorry,"said Owl,"I shouldn't have said 'r' is 'rer'.It's 'r' as in 'red', Roo. Then you say 'oo'". "Red-oo',"said Roo. 'No,Roo,"said Owl.

@thoughtiswords Then when children spell out their names they say 'err' or 'ruh' when identifying the letter 'r'.

Justified Left @justified_left
@MichaelRosenYes 'o' can be tricky to pronounce consistently. For example, in the sentence: Shove off Gove.

@neverheardofher 'car' in Devon is not c plus digraph. It's c-v-c

@neverheardofher 'ar' in Devon is different from 'ar' in London. Devon, two clearly different phonemes. In London, one.

Love people telling me what the phoneme for 'r' is. UK is divided over whether to 'sound' the 'r' in eg 'mother' or 'card'.

Been looking at some school phonics guidelines for parents: eg 'decoding is reading words'. Rubbish. 'reading' is making letters mean stuff.

@MichaelRosenYes I don't think /r/ grapheme is pronounced conventionally as rer. You might require some basic phonics training Michael.
